Stone, Time and Patience

Set within the quiet landscape of Monferrato, the remains of an 18th-century farmhouse are being reimagined as a place to live. Its weathered walls, vaulted interiors and quiet courtyards offer the foundations for a residential setting shaped by history, landscape and a new sense of community.

The first studies explore how the existing architecture might accommodate contemporary homes without losing the stillness and character of the farmhouse. Former agricultural rooms and communal spaces suggest intimate interiors, while passages, courtyards and gardens create opportunities for shared spaces and moments of encounter.

The transformation begins by reading what is already there. Existing openings guide views towards the countryside. Changes in level suggest thresholds between private and collective life. Stone walls provide shelter and permanence, while carefully placed interventions can introduce light, comfort and a more fluid way of living.

Rather than dividing the farmhouse into isolated residences, the aim is to preserve a sense of connection—to the original architecture, to the surrounding land and between those who will inhabit it. New elements will sit quietly within the old structure, allowing its irregularities and traces of time to remain visible.
