THE SETTING
Villa Mundi is a 1958 Modernist villa overlooking the Lake of Geneva. With its iconic exposed concrete facades it consists of cubist volumes and characterstics reminiscent of Le Corbusier and the Bauhaus. It was abandoned for years and was bought by the Forum in 2019.

A curved retaining wall embraces the roots of a majestic cedar, while peeling the earth away from the underground facade of the new extension, transforming a technical necessity into the garden’s defining gesture.

THE SCOPE
to design a 100-pax auditorium, modular meeting rooms, a professional catering kitchen and a garage, in two levels below the villa and its garden; to rehabilitate and convert the existing residence into a private VIP venue. To redesign the terrace and garden for outdoor banquets and conference breakout moments.

THE SPECIAL REQUEST
The Forum’s request was threefold: to provide an inspiring setting for its conference venues and its more intimate gatherings; to pay homage to the villa’s style and epoch; and to showcase sustainability through craftsmanship, materials, technology and artwork.

THE CONCEPT
Respect and bring out the Cubist elements of the Villa. Design an elegant flow for conference goers and give a residential yet businesslike feel to the VIP floor. Work with lighting and ceiling design to avoid any feel of a corporate space. Work with Mondrian-like compositions of elements, bringing in a muted palette of colors enhanced by iconic Corbusian colors such as peacock green and copper.

SUSTAINABILITY APPROACH
Villa Mundi has sustainability and heritage conservation inscribed in its DNA. Historical and Architectural Legacy, Craft Preservation, Environmental Conservation, and Social Empowerment are central to its architecture, design and decoration. The use of recycled and upcycled materials reinvented through high-end craftsmanship frees up landfills, manages waste and celebrates artisans and artists around the globe.
