The Art of Disappearing
Some buildings announce themselves from afar. Others prefer to be discovered. Conceived for one of the world’s leading boarding schools, the Aiglon Sports Centre transforms a remarkably ambitious programme into an almost invisible presence within the Alpine landscape. Built into the hillside and sheltered beneath a living roof, the building preserves the scale and character of the village while revealing an unexpected world of sport, wellbeing, and student life below. What appears at first as part of the landscape unfolds, step by step, into a generous environment designed to support the physical, social, and emotional life of the school community.

THE SOCIAL DIMENSION OF SPORT
For Aiglon, sport has always been about more than performance. It is a vehicle for friendship, encouragement, resilience, and belonging. The building was therefore conceived not simply as a collection of athletic facilities but as a social landscape. A glazed lounge overlooking the court, an elevated internal gallery, and visually connected fitness and recreation spaces create opportunities for students to gather, observe, encourage one another, and remain connected to the life of the building. Throughout, architecture strengthens the bonds that define campus life, transforming moments between activities into meaningful experiences of community.

What makes this building so special is its ability to provide our students with exceptional facilities while preserving everything we value about our village setting. What appears modest from the outside reveals an extraordinary world within.
