VILLA MUNDI

Turning a Listed Residential Property into a VIP Conference Venue

THE SETTING Villa Mundi is a 1958 Modernist villa overlooking the Lake of Geneva. With its iconic exposed concrete facades it consists of cubist volumes and characterstics reminiscent of Le Corbusier and the Bauhaus. It was abandoned for years and was bought by the Forum in 2019.

THE SCOPE to design a 100-pax auditorium, modular meeting rooms, a professional catering kitchen and a garage, in two levels below the villa and its garden; to rehabilitate and convert the existing residence into a private VIP venue. To redesign the terrace and garden for outdoor banquets and conference breakout moments.

THE SPECIAL REQUEST The Forum’s request was threefold: to provide an inspiring setting for its conference venues and its more intimate gatherings; to pay homage to the villa’s style and epoch; and to showcase sustainability through craftsmanship, materials, technology and artwork.

THE CONCEPT Respect and bring out the Cubist elements of the Villa. Design an elegant flow for conference goers and give a residential yet businesslike feel to the VIP floor. Work with lighting and ceiling design to avoid any feel of a corporate space. Work with Mondrian-like compositions of elements, bringing in a muted palette of colors enhanced by iconic Corbusian colors such as peacock green and copper.
